Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, has a number of projects cooking, and we may have caught the scent of yet another one! A rumor just popped up that he may appear as Black Adam in Suicide Squad 2.
Johnson landed the Black Adam role almost a decade ago, but he still hasn’t played the character in a movie. The original plan was to feature the supervillain – or anti-hero, as the wrestler-turned-actor describes him – in Shazam! But earlier this year, we learned that Warner Bros. had opted to give him a separate standalone movie.
The Black Adam movie recently brought in screenwriter Adam Sztykiel, so it’s still happening. Of course, it's going to take a while for it to move into production. But that doesn't necessarily mean a long wait to see The Rock as the iconic DC Comics character. He could very well be introduced in another DC Extended Universe installment in the interim.
And that may be exactly what the studio has in mind. TheWrap reported that The Rock's character might turn up in Suicide Squad 2. Two studio insiders informed the outlet that the plan is to have the Worst Heroes Ever track down "a weapon of mass destruction", namely Black Adam.
It was previously rumored that the sequel to David Ayer's 2016 blockbuster would kick off filming in March 2018, but the new report suggested that Warner Bros. was looking at October 2018. The Rock is involved in several projects, but insiders say that they’re unlikely to cause scheduling conflicts, as filming for Black Adam's part is likely to be brief.
Last May, Johnson teased "a really cool surprise" in relation to his character's DCEU debut. We expected that we’d have our first glimpse of Black Adam in Man of Steel 2, and had heard another rumor to that effect.
But, like the Black Adam movie, that project is in such early stages of development that it doesn’t even have a director yet. On the other hand, Suicide Squad 2 has had a director for a couple of months, and was announced at San Diego Comic-Con International as one of the eight DCEU movies Warner Bros. will have in store for us after 2018's Aquaman. So the new rumor might actually carry some weight.
