The Conjuring 2 might be the movie that James Wan is promoting at the moment, but he is asked about his next project, Aquaman, more often. The DC Extended Universe installment won't hit the theaters any sooner than July 27, 2018, but questions about the movie just keep coming.
In a recent interview with Uproxx, The Conjuring and Furious 7 director is asked whether there are additional DC movies besides Aquaman in the mix. While responding to the question, James Wan reveals something we didn't know before.
Arthur Curry's standalone movie wasn't the only option he had in front of him! According to the director:
They asked me which of the two characters I'd be interested in, and it was between The Flash and Aquaman.
Why didn't he choose to direct Barry Allen's standalone movie? Wan says that the reason he didn't pick The Flash movie is that we've seen "various versions" of the character on screen already.
He also reveals that he was a big fan of the 1990s television series in which John Wesley Shipp played the Scarlet Speedster.
That's not all! There's more behind his decision to helm Aquaman rather than The Flash. Wan explains:
But the thing that ultimately pushed me more toward Aquaman is I love the possibility of creating a whole new world. I've always wanted to do a world creation story and visually create this amazing, incredible, magical kingdom.
The director also loves the fact that the King of the Seven Seas is "an underdog character". He loves that "people like to make fun of him" and feels that "the bar is a lot lower" when he can have "fun" with the character. Wan adds:
I think people are a lot less precious with him than, let's say, you were doing a Spider-Man or a Batman or whatever.
