Back in May, around three months prior to Suicide Squad's theatrical release, it was revealed that a spin-off featuring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was in the works. According to that report, rather than a standalone movie for the female supervillain, it will focus on several female superheroes and supervillains from DC Comics, like Batgirl and Birds of Prey.
Now, The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez claims to have an update regarding the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey movie. He suggests that Warner Bros. has hired a screenwriter to pen the untitled movie's script. And, like many other contemporary female-centric movies, the scribe for this one is a woman, Christina Hodson.
The British scribe is best known for penning the script for Farren Blackburn's recently released Shut In, which features Naomi Watts and Oliver Platt. She has also co-written the script of Denise Di Novi's upcoming flick Unforgettable, with David Leslie Johnson. Katherine Heigl, Rosario Dawson, and Geoff Stults are starring in the movie, which is scheduled to release next April.
Hodson is reportedly also working on the script of the Transformers franchise's Bumblebee spinoff. So, despite being new in Hollywood, she seems to have already grabbed a good bit of attention.
It was mentioned in the previous report that Margot Robbie would not just reprise her DC Extended Universe character in the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey movie, but would also serve as one of its producers. She was termed "the impetus for the project". A couple of months ago, it was revealed that she was signing a first-look deal with Warner Bros. to develop and produce the movie under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner.
The studio still hasn't made an official comment about the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey movie, nor has it set a release date. But it could be the untitled movie that they have scheduled to roll into theaters on November 1, 2019.
