Zack Snyder will bring Justice League to the big screen in 2017, with a cast that will include Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. We’ve already seen this trio in Batman v Superman marketing materials.
Nine years ago, Justice League was growing wings under the directorial command of the legendary George Miller. The script was written and the cast was ready to start filming in Australia in February 2008. With just a month’s notice, Warner Bros. decided to cancel it, stating that the script needed perfecting. After more delays and excuses, they announced that the filming was going to move to Canada. Miller was disappointed. At that time, the Mad Max director said:
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Australian film industry is being frittered away because of very lazy thinking. They’re throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars in investments that the rest of the world is competing for and, much more significantly, highly skilled creative jobs.
Justice League Mortal almost happened, but…
In a recent interview for THR, Miller mentioned that he found “modern superhero myths” really interesting. The reporter asked what happened to Justice League Mortal. He replied:
I really was attracted to it. But there was a writers strike looming. We had to cast it very quickly, which we did with Warner's casting people. And we cast it really quickly and we mounted it very quickly. And it depended on a start date and it depended on some basic rebate legislation that had just got through a new Australian government. But it was just too big a decision for them to make in the time. And that fell through and the whole film fell through. We almost got there. And it wasn't to be. But that happens a lot, where films line up and the stars look like they're aligning and they didn't.
Justice League Mortal was supposed to follow the Justice League animated series, parts of Tower of Babel, and OMAC Project DC Comics stories.
An upcoming documentary about the troubled production will likely give us some information on what was happening. The cast and the crew will be interviewed, and we mightcould see artwork and costumes that were never made public.
What do you think Justice League would’ve looked like with George Miller at the helm?
