Ever since the first look at Suicide Squad's Joker was officially released, we’ve been aware that this version isn't anything like The Jokers we've seen before. It's very dissimilar to the way the character was played by Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger. And Jared Leto reassured us of this once again during a recent interview with SuperHeroHype, during which he was asked if Suicide Squad will provide an origin for the Clown Prince of Crime. He answered, “I don't think I'm allowed to talk about that so much. But we walked in a completely new direction. I think we knew that we had to do that. It was important to do that.”
According to the actor, The Joker has been "done so well" in the past, it gives an indication of what to avoid. He says that there's "a bit of a map there". And he feels that getting the chance to portray the infamous supervillain is "quite an honor". Leto explains:
I'm just the latest in the long list of people who have redefined and reinvented this character. The actors, the voice actors, the television series, the writers, the artists and the fans. People have taken the Joker and reinvented and redefined for 75 years. It is really special to be asked to do that.
Well, even though the actor feels honored to have bagged the role, I'm not sure if his Suicide Squad co-stars feel the same. No one feels honored when the gifts you send to them are "used condoms" and "anal beads"! Leto recently revealed that he's sent such gifts to his co-stars!
Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn enjoys everything she does!
While Jared Leto is portraying the latest version of The Joker in Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie is playing the first live-action incarnation of Harley Quinn. In order to portray the character, Robbie suggests that she's done a good bit of homework on "mental illness and codependency".
The Aussie actress initially thought that the reason behind Harley's mad love for The Joker is her codependence on him. But after doing the research, she realizes that the love is "more of an addiction than an illness". Here's how Margot Robbie describes her Harley Quinn:
You see many sides of her. Sometimes she's really funny. Sometimes she's really mean. She just enjoys everything she does. Whether she's doing something good or bad, she'll have an equal amount of enjoyment out of it.
