There was some buzz about it a few weeks ago, but now it's more than just a rumor: Ewan McGregor will be playing Black Mask in Birds of Prey.
A rumor tagged along with the casting reports of Huntress and Black Canary in Birds of Prey suggesting that Ewan McGregor was one of the actors being eyed for the role of Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask. It was a stage where Warner Bros. had just started meeting actors for the part - so, we couldn't take it as gospel. But it's time to cast aside all doubts.
Multiple Hollywood trades, including Deadline, are reporting that the actor who portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy has landed the villainous role after all. He is joining the cast roster that already includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress, and Rosie Perez as Renee Montaya. The studio is currently looking for a young, half-Asian actress to play the part of Cassandra Cain.
In his two and a half decades long career, McGregor has starred in a wide variety of movies. But interestingly, he has never popped up in a superhero movie. So, the upcoming female-driven DC Comics adaptation is going to be a first for him. And it's going to be the second time he's been in the same project with Elizabeth Winstead - the duo had worked together in the third season of FX's Fargo.
Not much is known about the plot of Birds of Prey, but there's definitely going to be room for some sort of adult material. This is because director Cathy Yan has confirmed at the recently-held U.S.-China Entertainment Summit (via Deadline) that the movie is aiming for an R-rating. She has also suggested that Christina Hodson's script is swarming with dark humor and contains strong and relatable themes of female empowerment.
