Last year, we came across reports suggesting that Aquaman would kick off production in the first half of 2017, but an exact date wasn't revealed. A month ago, Jason Momoa shared that the cameras would start rolling in "four or five months". Again, he didn’t mention a specific date.
However, we have one now! My Entertainment World has revealed that the first standalone movie for the King of the Seven Seas will start filming on May 22, 2017. Under the working title Ahab, the film will be shot in Queensland, Australia and Sicily, Italy.
We've been aware of the movie’s working title since December, and of the Australia location since November. But this is the first we've heard about the Italy location. A recent rumor suggested that shooting could also take place in Hawaii, but that doesn't seem likely.
It’s good to know when Aquaman’s production will begin, but this next bit of news could have the opposite effect! James Wan has confirmed via his official Twitter account that there will be no Aqualad in the October 5, 2018 release. Check out his tweet below:
Absolutely not at all. But thanks for asking. https://t.co/THEIDZG1n8

When a fan expressed his disappointment that the Aquaman-sidekick would not appear in the upcoming DC Extended Universe installment, Wan tweeted an explanation:
How about we get Batman established properly first, before we cram in Robin. https://t.co/RlX3YiWelB

While there’s no doubt that Aqualad will not appear in Aquaman, we might see the character somewhere down the road"¦maybe in a sequel?
James Wan also revealed that he’ll reunite with his The Conjuring 2 cinematographer Don Burgess for Aquaman. Burgess earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography for his work in Forrest Gump. He’s also been recognized for his work in Spider-Man, Terminator 3, and Allied. Check out the director's tweet below:
Don Burgess. Some upcoming kid I gave a break to on Conjuring 2. https://t.co/BMzyqzrSE3
