According to an early November report, James Wan's Aquaman was about to head into pre-production by the end of the month on Australia's Gold Coast, where Taika Waititi filmed 2017’s Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, Thor: Ragnarok. It was reported that cameras would begin rolling for Aquaman by January 2017. Now, we have another update reminding us that the first standalone movie for the King of the Seven Seas will soon become a reality.
Production Weekly has disclosed that the working title for Aquaman is Ahab. It doesn't seem to be a direct reference to anything in the comic books; it’s more an allusion to Captain Ahab from Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby-Dick. The character was the monomaniacal captain of the whaling ship Pequod, whose leg was bitten off by the white whale Moby Dick.
Interestingly, Aquaman also lost limbs a couple of times in the comics. The first time was when the mad supervillain Charybdis stole his ability to communicate with sea life and stuck his left hand into a pool full of piranha. The second time was during the events of Brightest Day, when his archenemy, Black Manta, cut off his hand.
Is something like that going to happen in the July 27, 2018 release? We have no idea, as hardly anything is known about the DC Extended Universe installment's actual plot. We only know that the titular superhero, played by Jason Momoa, will have Mera (Amber Heard) and Vulko (Willem Dafoe) alongside him in Aquaman.
Black Manta is rumored to be the main antagonist, but this is yet to be confirmed. But with the movie nearing its filming, some official announcements can be expected in the coming weeks.
