The Penguin Won’t Have A Big Role In The Batman Part II

The Batman (Penguin) - Warner Bros.

Don’t expect Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb to have a big part in The Batman Part II. Farrell first brought The Penguin to life in 2022’s The Batman. Through a lot of prosthetics, the Oscar-nominated actor completely transformed into the classic DC Comics villain. Now that the sequel is finally coming together, Farrell has addressed his participation in the project. He’ll be there, but on a limited basis, it seems.

In a recent interview with The Wrap, Farrell was speaking about The Penguin with the Emmys coming up. During the conversation, he was asked about director Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, which now has a script and is finally headed in the right direction. Farrell confirmed that he’s going to be in it, but that he only has a few scenes. Here’s what he had to say about it.

“I’ll be getting into the script, I think, this week, and I’ll be there for however long. I don’t have many scenes, I don’t believe, but I’ll be there for whatever. Matt Reeves is so brilliant. I don’t know what the story is yet. I just know that obviously Matt has slaved for a few years now to really make something special. And he holds a very high bar for himself. He’s so meticulous; he cares so deeply about what he does.”

“I would really love to revisit her. I want to play her again,” Cristin Milioti, who plays Sofia Falcone, added.

Plot details for the sequel remain firmly under wraps at this time. Robert Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne but virtually no other casting has been revealed. The big question is who the villain will be. Paul Dano portrayed the Riddler in the first film, with Farrell’s Penguin and John Turtorro’s Carmine Falcone also on the board. It seems that Penguin won’t be stepping up as the main villain this time around.

The Batman 2 is set to begin filming early next year. That being the case, we’ll learn more about casting sooner rather than later. As for who the main villain will be? It’s anyone’s guess at this point. Many rumors have surfaced online. However, DC Studios co-head James Gunn has been quick to squash many of those rumors.

“If there is more story to tell, and there may be in that world. But you don’t want to follow up something excellent with something less excellent,” Sarah Aubrey, the head of Original Content for HBO Max, previously said about a possible The Penguin season 2. “It took a very long time to get this show made and we had many different iterations, so I’m just like, ‘Can I please just enjoy this for a second?!’ But as we say, we never shut the door.”

The Batman Part II is currently set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
