Kevin Feige Talks Captain Marvel Director Shortlist and Brie Larson Casting Choice!

Kevin Feige talks about short list of directors for Captain Marvel and Brie Larson casting choice!

During their Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con International, Marvel Studios made the announcement that Short Term 12 and Room star Brie Larson would be portraying Captain Marvel. But the studio didn't announce who would direct Carol Danvers' standalone movie. But, while talking to Coming Soon, Kevin Feige offers an update on that too.

According to the Marvel head honcho, they already have a "short list", and it features the names of ten directors. Who are they? Feige wouldn't reveal that. But he adds that they are expecting to make a decision about who they would hire to helm Captain Marvel by "the end of this summer".

A short list of ten doesn't sound like a very short list! Even if we put together all of the names that we've heard at different times, there's still half of that list that remains unknown.

At first, we came across a rumor that put forward three contenders for the director's chair of the first Marvel Cinematic Universe female superhero standalone movie. These three directors were Emily Carmichael, Emily Young, and Emily Ting.

Then, there was another rumor claiming that Elizabeth Wood was close to signing a deal. The most recent rumor suggested that Jennifer Kent was being considered.

But considering the fact that Captain Marvel doesn't hit the theaters until March 8, 2019, Marvel has ample time to find the right person for the job.

During the interview, Kevin Feige stated that Carol won't appear in any other MCU installment prior to her standalone movie. Then, he cryptically added the phrase "unless she does"! So, he basically wants us to keep guessing about the female superhero's appearance in the first Avengers: Infinity War movie!

In a separate interview with Cinema Blend, the Marvel President explains why they picked Brie Larson for the role of Captain Marvel. According to him, they had "set the bar very high" when they picked Robert Downey Jr. for Iron Man role. That was the first casting decision they ever made. Feige adds:

Since then, every single choice we’ve made, we have asked, “Could it meet that bar?” Because that is what people expect of us, and that is what…it’s a very high bar. Carol Danvers needs to be as rich and textured and real as the best of our characters. Maybe even more so. And we got very lucky that Brie – who has all of those attributes, and an Academy Award now – was still very interested in signing up and joining us to bring this character to life.

I, for one, didn't need an EXPLANATION for why they signed someone as highly talented as Brie Larson to play Captain Marvel. In my opinion, she's a better fit for the role than all the other actresses who were rumored to be linked. Check out the footage of Marvel making the Brie Larson casting announcement!
