Guillermo del Toro developed a live-action adaptation of Justice League Dark under the working title Dark Universe, but left the project in June 2015. That wasn’t the end of the movie, however, and Warner Bros. hired Doug Liman as the new director in August 2016.
Since that time, there have been no major updates on the Justice League Dark movie. We do have some good news, though. Liman recently confirmed to CinemaBlend that he’s still committed to the project. He also offered brief insight into his approach, drawing parallels between the DC Extended Universe installment and his latest war movie, The Wall, which arrives in theaters next week:
I think people will be surprised how character driven and how intimate Justice League Dark is – in kind of a field of bloated comic book movies. We’ve found a way to do something that’s actually really personal and small, and that’s my goal. [My new movie] The Wall is about character. The scenario allows me to dive into what I think is…I just love people! I love putting people in crazy situations. For John Constantine, we have an amazing set-up for him for Justice League Dark that’s really human.
Liman has been a director for over two decades, and he’s consistently impressed us with movies that include Swingers, Go, The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Edge of Tomorrow. With that sort of resume, we expect that he’ll deliver a memorable live-action adaptation of Justice League Dark.
Unfortunately, the director didn't provide any information about production or a release date. However, a report from a couple of months ago suggested that it was one of the five DCEU ventures that might be shot alongside Aquaman, and that movie’s already kicked off production.
