Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has already introduced Jason Momoa as our first live-action Aquaman. The actor is set to reprise his role in next year's Justice League. But it will be in 2018 that Momoa's Aquaman standalone movie is released.
James Wan, who is at the helm, has already promised that the Aquaman movie will be "fun" and we’ll get to see "sea monsters and cool creatures" in it.
In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, the director teases the villains he will be using in the July 27, 2018 release. Claiming that the characters in Aquaman's world are "really different" and "really interesting", James Wan adds:
They are interesting characters, including the villains - I'm not going to tell you which villains I'm going to play with! [laughs] But they're super cool. They're very larger-than-life, but they're unique.
The director further states that he doesn't want to make a superhero movie "for the sake of doing it". He's doing the upcoming DC Extended Universe installment only because there is "something unique to the world of Aquaman". Wan explains:
There's a reason why they've never made a movie about this until now, because technology has never allowed us to tackle something this complicated. And so because of that it feels like something different, and that uniqueness is what I'm excited about.
Aquaman has existed in the comic books since the early 1940s, but the character never appeared in a live-action venture, other than a few episodes of Smallville. We have to agree with James Wan that there wasn't sufficient technology – until now – to really make a live-action movie on the King of the Seven Seas work.
