The next era of the Power Rangers is nearly upon us. In March of last year, it was revealed that a new iteration of the show was in the works for Disney+. Now, we finally have a relatively significant update on the project. While many details remain elusive, casting is underway and filming on the show is set to begin in just a few short months. 

 

According to The DisInsider, filming on the new Power Rangers show is expected to begin in April. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) are on board to produce. As for casting, nothing has been confirmed but this new report has some names of interest. Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Doogie Kamealoha M.D.) and Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) were named, but not to any specific roles. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, however, is said to be on the wishlist for the villain Rita Repulsa. 

 

The character was first introduced in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series. Elizabeth Banks played her in 2017’s Power Rangers movie. Again, none of this casting is confirmed but after nearly a year of quiet development, it seems like things are finally headed in the right direction. 

 

“The rumor is true,” Shotz said to MovieWeb in December, confirming that they are working on the show. He wouldn’t confirm if it would be a continuation or a reboot, but added, “Let’s just say we very much hope to bring that story to life, so that’s all I can say at this point.”

 

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first premiered in 1993. It has been going strong ever since, with hundreds of episodes produced over the years across its various iterations. Several movies have been produced as well. In 2021, Netflix was developing a full-on Power Rangers universe. However, that fell apart along the way, which paved the way for this Disney+ series. 

 

Here is the synopsis for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. 

 

“A close knit band of teenagers in fictional Angel Grove, Calif., transforms into a uniformed team of superheroes ready to take on any villains. Their primary focus is Rita Repulsa, a space villainess captured long ago by the wise sage Zordon and inadvertently freed by astronauts. Zordon recruits the teens to help him recapture Rita, and later to battle against Lord Zedd, Rito Revolto, and Master Vile.”

 

The new Power Rangers show doesn’t currently have a release date.
