Disney+ is getting dangerous. The streaming service has confirmed that they are officially rebooting Darkwing Duck. The ‘90s cult favorite superhero is getting a new animated series, one with an A-list cast from A-list creators.
According to Variety, the Darkwing Duck reboot has been ordered to series by Disney+. Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui are writers and executive producers on the reboot. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who were behind The Boys on Prime Video, are also producing. James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham are also on board as producers. Tad Stones, the creator of the original series, consulted on the development of the new show.
The cast is led by Mark Hamill (Batman: The Animated Series) as Darkwing Duck and Rogen (The Boys) as Launchpad McQuack. The stacked ensemble also includes Lizzy Caplan (Party Down) as Gosalyn Mallard, Lilimar (Inside Out 2) as Duckie, Dan Stevens (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis (Star Trek: Picard) as Rosa, Kathryn Newton (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) as Firecracker, Teo Briones (Final Destination Bloodlines) as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores (Neon) as Pondsy, Katie Rich (Saturday Night Live) as Officer Shanks and Nat Faxon (Hit-Monkey) as Officer Webb.
Here is the synopsis for the new Darkwing Duck.
“For the last 35 years, Darkwing Duck has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world that’s never heard of his superhero exploits. Now a rebellious teen named Duckie who knows all about his heroic past shows up to pull this ego-fueled vigilante back into battle. Together, this unlikely duo will get dangerous to fight old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt and reunite with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana to save the entire universe.”
“Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series,” Stones said. “The new creative team has certainly amped up the action and comedy without forgetting the Disney heart. This series places DW in the literary tradition of Robin Hood, Zorro, and Sherlock Holmes, heroes whose lore has been reinterpreted by multiple creators in multiple mediums. They explored the core of those characters by tossing them into new eras, new relationships, and even new universes. No matter when or where, Darkwing Duck will appear in a cloud of blue smoke to grab the spotlight.”
Hamill is a Star Wars legend who is also known for his work as Joker in the DC animated universe. He originated the role in Batman: The Animated Series, one of the best Batman TV shows of all time. Rogen and Goldberg, meanwhile, have become aficionados when it comes to comic book adaptations. They were also behind Preacher on AMC, as well as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. That movie is getting a sequel, due to hit theaters next year. This is just another credit on their ever-growing resume.
The original Darkwing Duck aired for three seasons between 1991 and 1992. It was later continued via comic books and video games. However, this is the first new project in the realm of animation in decades.
