Nearly 30 years after the original show came to an end, the Street Sharks are coming back. That’s right! The folks at IDW have partnered with Mattel to bring back the half-man, half-shark superheroes for a brand new comic book miniseries. What’s more, this new series will be picking up right where the show left off so we can party like it’s 1997 all over again.
First reported by IGN, Street Sharks #1 is due to be released in September. It’s the first issue in a five-issue miniseries from Stephanie Williams (Trial of the Amazons) with artwork by Ariel Medel (TMNT vs Street Fighter). We’ve also got a look at two different covers for the first issue, which you can check out below. Mattel is one of the world’s biggest toymakers, while IDW is the publisher behind the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles books, among many others.
“Street Sharks has remained a fan-favorite for over 30 years, and fans have been eager for more stories featuring the fearless Bolton brothers,” said Ryan Ferguson, Global Head of Publishing at Mattel. “We’re excited to explore new depths of this world with IDW and bring these jaw-some characters back to life in comic book form.”
Here is the synopsis for the new Street Sharks comic.
“Based on the classic animated series, the upcoming comics will thrill readers as the Sharks protect Fission City from a range of gene-slammed threats, including super-strong and monstrous lobsters and squids, and diabolical mad scientists that transform into vicious piranha monsters. The comic will deliver on everything fans loved from the hit show and the tone of its era, from the Sharks riding cool motorcycles to eating a lot of burgers and metal while swimming through the city’s concrete to take down the bad guys.”
Street Sharks was created by Phil Harnage and Martha Moran. The series aired for three seasons from 1994 to 1997. The show was popular and also generated a memorable line of toys hailing from Mattel.
“Our renewed partnership with Mattel highlights what makes collaborations like this work—shared vision and creative alignment,” David Jonas, CEO of IDW Media Holdings added. “We’re thrilled to be the ones expanding the Street Sharks legacy in this exciting new direction.” Series editor Nicolas Niño also had the following to say about it.
“The Street Sharks were pure ’90s adrenaline, and that energy translates perfectly to the comic page. Stephanie and Ariel are crafting a story that honors everything fans loved about the original while also offering a fresh take that new readers can latch onto.”
