During yesterday's Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con International, Marvel Studios blew away attendees by showing the first footage from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sad news for us, the ones who weren't there: The studio hasn't released it online yet – and it's unlikely that they’ll release it any time soon.
However, thanks to the ones who were there, we have their description of the footage! And from the description, we can reveal the roles of three Spider-Man: Homecoming cast members. Just as the rumors suggested, the lead supervillain in the Jon Watts flick is indeed The Vulture, and Michael Keaton will portray the character!
But the rumors weren't true in case of Zendaya and Tony Revolori. The actress is not playing someone named Michelle, nor is the actor portraying Manuel. Instead, both are playing characters who have existed in the pages of Marvel Comics. In fact, both characters were introduced by Stan Lee in the same August 1962 issue, Amazing Fantasy #15.
Zendaya's character is apparently Liz Allan, while Revolori's character is surely Flash Thompson! Liz has never appeared in a live-action movie, but Flash has. The character was portrayed by Joe Manganiello in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies and Chris Zylka in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man series.
UPDATE: According to director Jon Watts, Zendaya is indeed playing Michelle in Spider-Man: Homecoming! He has revealed to Entertainment Weekly that it’s Laura Harrier who will be seen as Liz Allan in the movie. He has also revealed that newcomer Jacob Batallon is portraying Ned (most probably Ned Leeds).
Here's how Comic Book's Lucas Siegel describes the Spider-Man: Homecoming footage shown at Comic-Con!:
Bad Reputation plays, and shots of high school. “Every Story” then shots of Tony, Rhodey, each character in high school. “Every journey. Has a beginning.” Peter is walking through school, and a homecoming banner goes up. 9:30 am Science. Peter’s looking at footage of himself taking Giant Man down. Flash Thompson is an Indian character. The Disney channel star Zendaya may be playing Liz Allan! In Chemistry, Parker works on his web fluid on the side. A girl is playing F, M, K with Avengers. Liz thinks Spidey is hot. One of his other friends is trying to figure out what he’s hiding. Jump cuts of him running down a hallway zipping a hoodie over the costume, and climbing up a wall, and finally, he and the “Ganke type” doing a handshake. Then VULTURE comes down a tube, with crazy armor.
Marvel might not have released the Comic-Con footage online, but they have offered something else for the fans around the globe. The studio has launched a brand new concept art piece for Spider-Man: Homecoming which offers our first look at The Vulture. You can check it out below!
Apart from the concept art, Marvel has also released the first official synopsis for the upcoming July 7, 2017 release. It's very brief, but you may still find it worth checking out:
