A new era for Marvel’s first family begins right now. The publisher has revealed a brand new trailer for Fantastic Four #1, which just hit shelves this week. The new book is meant to give readers a new entrypoint for the series and will see Reed Richards and the going going on a series of smaller-scale adventures. Check it out.
Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) is writing the new series, with Iban Coello (Venom) handling the artwork. This new era for the Fantastic Four comes following Dan Slott’s epic run with Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing. But it looks to be more of a back-to-basics, ‘60s style adventure in the vein of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Here is the synopsis for Fantastic Four #1.
“‘Whatever Happened To The Fantastic Four?’ It’s the start of a new era for the Fantastic Four…and they’re already in a ton of trouble. Something has gone terribly wrong in New York, and the Thing and Alicia are traveling across America to escape it! But when they stop in a small town for the night and wake up the morning before they arrived, they find themselves caught in a time loop that’s been going on since before they were born…That’s been going on since before they were born…That’s been going on since before they were born…”
“I want to do these smaller, self-contained stories in the vein of ’60s Star Trek, where they go down to a planet, find a weird thing, fix the weird thing, and move on,” North said speaking to Entertainment Weekly. “Having these four weirdos roll into town where there’s a mystery or a problem or some sci-fi thing, solve the problem, and then move on struck me as a very interesting way to position the Fantastic Four and tell stories that would feel fresh and not like a retread of what we’ve seen before.”
The relaunch of the book comes at an opportune time for Marvel. Currently, a Fantastic Four movie reboot is in the works that will take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Matt Shakman, who directed WandaVision, has been tapped to direct the film. It is currently slated to arrive on February 14, 2025, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU. That means the group is very much in the table for Avengers: Secret Wars, which will close out Phase 6 with a presumably big bang.
Fantastic Four #1 is on sale now.
