Knull is back but this time, he’s got company. Marvel Comics has announced a brand new miniseries entitled Queen in Black. Hitting shelves this summer, the series sees Hela, the Goddess of Death, going toe-to-toe with the King of the Symbiotes. Only one can win. Who will it be? Let them fight!
The series hails from writer Al Ewing (Venom) and artist Iban Coello (Fantastic Four). It spins out of Ewing’s work on Venom, which dates back to 2021. It’s also born out of the new Knull (2026) limited series, which saw Hela seize Knull’s throne, forcing him to claim a new power for himself. Their conflict will erupt across the cosmos, coming to a head on Earth where Earth’s mightiest heroes will need to stop the carnage.
Here is the synopsis for Queen in Black.
“On the farthest edges of the solar system, Knull, God of the Void, builds a brand-new army to destroy Earth… but Hela of Asgard might have gotten there first – as she makes planetfall with a legion of the galaxy’s deadliest symbiotes! Two of the most powerful evils in the galaxy are at war…A cosmic collision of evil versus evil with Venom, Mary Jane and Dylan Brock caught right in the middle!”
“The only threat bigger than one evil God is two of them fighting each other, with Earth caught right in the middle,” Ewing said. “As an old-school ‘60s Marvel villain, Hela’s a great match-up against the newer school of Knull, especially given the steps she’s been taking to get onto his level. There can only be one winner – but whoever wins, it’s the worst news possible for our heroes.”
This is very much a spiritual sequel to the Knull-centric event series King in Black, which was published between 2020 and 2021. Knull has since become a major villain in the Marvel universe. He was even poised to become the big bad of Sony’s Marvel universe. However, Sony is reboothing things after the failure of Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter.
Marvel has several major events coming our way throughout 2026. The publisher also has Avengers: Armageddon kicking off in June. So that may explain when Venom and Mary Jane are left to contend with Knull and Hela, as the Avengers may well be tied up with their own drama.
Queen in Black #1 hits shelves on July 1.
