Rob Liefeld is coming back to Marvel for a special anniversary. The publisher has announced that Liefeld is returning for an X-Force 30th anniversary special. Titled X-Force: Killshot, the writer and artist who initially brought the team to life three decades ago is returning for a new book set within that universe.

X-Force: Killshot - Marvel Comics

X-Force: Killshot is a special one-shot issue feature an explosive adventure starring Cable and his mighty militant mutant squad. Per Marvel, it takes readers “back to the beloved ’90s heyday of the X-Men franchise. Cable and his counterparts will assemble five separate X-Force squadrons – from various points in time – to converge on Asteroid S for an all-out assault to defeat Stryfe once and for all.”

X-FORCE was a huge gamble that paid off big for Marvel, paid off big for retailers and it changed my life forever.” Liefeld said. “I’m thrilled and honored to share KILLSHOT with everyone. Thirty years in the making, I intend to make every page a huge kick for fans new and old.”

X-Force #1 was originally released in June 1991. It was at a time of a new boom in comics when sales for many titles were off the charts. But this X-Men offshoot set itself apart. With a group consisting of characters like Cable, Cannonball, Domino, Warpath, Shatterstar, Feral, and Boom-Boom, and eventually Deadpool, it stood out to readers. It went on to sell more than 5 million copies and remains one of the best-selling single issues in comic book history.

“It Was 30 Years Ago Today! June 25, 1991,” Liefled said in a post on Instagram commemorating the anniversary. “X-FORCE kicked down the door and never looked back! Where were you 30 years ago? Where’d you buy your copies, did you get all of them? How old were you? Thank you, thank you, thank you for believing in my spastic energy. 5 MILLION copies, the #2 best selling comic of all time. CABLE! DEADPOOL! DOMINO! SHATTERSTAR! It’s more mind blowing to me today than it was back then. Love hearing your memories of X-Force. I’ll share mine over the course of the day. Thanks again!”

Hollywood has flirted with the team at various points. Deadpool 2 assembled an X-Force team. The idea was to have them be a part of Deadpool 3. Though those plans have changed now that the sequel is being handled by Disney and Marvel Studios. An X-Force movie was also in the cards at one point when Fox controlled the rights. Again, those plans have since been extinguished.

X-Force: Killshot #1 hits shelves in November.
