A new era for Tony Stark begins in December. Marvel Comics has released a trailer for Invincible Iron Man #1, which launches next month. The new series is set to test Iron Man’s limits, pitting him against several major villains, including Feilong. The trailer previews what we can expect from when Tony hits rock bottom. Check it out.
The book comes from In writer Gerry Duggan and artist Juan Frigeri. The trailer does not hide the tough times ahead for our hero. We see cracked armor, Iron Man looking bloody and beaten, lots of explosions, and other apocalyptic imagery. All of the money and resources at his disposable seemingly can’t save him from what’s coming.
Here is the synopsis for Invincible Iron Man #1.
“IT ALL ENDS! Tony Stark, the genius-billionaire-playboy-philanthropist, has lost it all: his wealth?his fame?his friends. But Stark doesn’t realize he still has so much more to lose, especially when the assassins start to come for him! It’s the beginning of the end, as the Golden Avenger must fight for his life and find out what it really means to hit rock bottom.”
“Tony will be tested, as will the armor,” Duggan said in a recent interview with Comic Book Resources. “As a longtime Iron Man fan, I’m very happy to be throwing everything from my years of notes on the character into one big story. I’ve only pitched stories with beginnings, middles and ends for a while now, and I’m getting to execute on my favorite ideas for both Tony and Iron Man. There is an attempt by our villain to make Tony his own worst enemy.”
This represents a new future for Iron Man in the comics, but what about beyond the page? Robert Downey Jr. finished his run as the character in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. While the multiverse has been opening up in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve yet to meet another version of Iron Man. It’s unclear when/if that will happen. Though, with Avengers: Secret Wars coming our way in Phase 6, it seems like nothing is off the table. But that also could end up being a soft reboot for the MCU, depending on how the comic is adapted. That would, potentially, pave the way for a reboot with a new actor. Much of this is speculative but we know for sure the Ironheart series is on the way, which will give Iron Man a successor of sorts.
Invincible Iron Man #1 hits shelves on December 14.
