The First New DC Universe Movies And TV Shows Officially Announced

The time has arrived, DC fans! DC Studios has officially revealed the first wave of new projects coming over the next handful of years. The DC Universe will change dramatically under its new leaders, James Gunn and Peter Safran. Gunn is known best for directing the Guardians of the Galaxy films, as well as The Suicide Squad. Now? He and his producing partner Safran are ushering in a new era for the DCU. It all begins, in earnest, with Superman: Legacy in 2025 – but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Gunn made the announcement of the first slate of new projects in the above video. A press event with Gunn and Safran was also held to share the news. The first chapter in the new DCU is called Gods and Monsters.  Though we still have four movies on deck this year, including Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. While there are more projects in development, Warner Bros. and DC Studios have announced ten of them – five shows and five movies – that will kick off the next phase. Let’s see what they’ve got coming.

DC Universe Movies

Superman: Legacy

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Swamp Thing

The Authority

The Brave and the Bold

The Batman Part II

You may notice there are six movies there. That’s because The Batman sequel, now titled The Batman Part II, had already been announced. But the title was confirmed as part of these new plans. Though, it should be noted that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will be different from the main DCU’s Batman. That version will debut in The Brave and the Bold, though no actor has been named. Gunn had the following to say about the slate.

“One of the things that’s very important for me in all of these movies and TV series is that the director’s vision, and the vision of the writers, and all of the creators, is unique and special. Storytelling is always king now. That’s all that matters to us. I want to be true to those stories, I want to be true to you guys, and really give you something different than you’ve ever seen before.

DC Universe TV Shows

Creature Commandos

Waller

Lanterns

Paradise Lost

Booster Gold

As for the TV shows, it’s a very mixed bag. Creature Commandos will be an animated series starring Weasel from The Suicide Squad. There’s also Waller, which will bring back Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Lanterns will star both John Stewart and Hal Jordan and finally bring Green Lantern back to live action. Meanwhile, Paradise Lost is a Wonder Woman prequel series, and Booster Gold is finally getting to take the spotlight in his very own series.

Gunn, for his part, is writing Superman: Legacy. No casting has been announced, but the movie will not bring back Henry Cavill in the role. Based on the announcements here, the DCU is mostly headed for a big reboot. That will kick off with The Flash movie this summer, which will help hit the reset button.

Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
