Transformers One won’t be the beginning of a trilogy after all. Last year’s animed take on the robots in disguise was very much meant to have a sequel. Unfortunately, that’s not going to be happening. While Paramount Pictures hasn’t made any sort of official announcement, it’s been made perfectly clear.
Director Josh Cooley has revealed that a sequel to Transformers One isn’t happening. At least not right now. Via Comicbook.com, Cooley addressed a possible Transformers Two during a panel at the Transformers convention BotCon recently. Unfortunately, his update was far from encouraging. Here’s What he had to say about it.
“I wish I had something to announce, but I do not. What I’ve been told is that Paramount Animation is not interested in making a sequel.”
Transformers One was a prequel that took place years ago on Cybertron, showing the origins of the complicated relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron. Not to spoil anything but it left off in a place for a very obvious sequel. The movie also boasted a very impressive voice cast including Chris Hemsworth (Optimus Prime), Brian Tyree Henry (Megatron), Scarlett Johansson (Elita-1), Keegan-Michael Key (Bumblebee), Steve Buscemi (Starscream), Laurence Fishburne (Alpha Trion) and Jon Hamm (Sentinel Prime).
Cooley’s film was also met with very positive reviews from critics. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to help its prospects at the box office. The animated feature made just $129 million worldwide against a reported $75 million budget. Even with toy sales factored in, that wasn’t nearly enough to make Paramount comfortable enough to move forward with a sequel. So this will go down as a one-and-done, despite greater ambitions.
“Number one, if we’re successful with this movie, we’re going to do a sequel for this,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura previously said to Screen Rant. “We already have, I think, the beginnings of a really interesting story for the second one, which is also character-based, the way the first [is].”
Here is the synopsis for Transformers One.
“Transformers One is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.”
It’s been a bit of a rough time for the franchise outside of the comics. Earlier this year it was revealed that the Transformers: Reactive video game had been canceled after years of development. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also failed to live up to expectations at the box office. But Paramount isn’t giving up yet, as a live-action Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie is currently in the works. Though few updates on that project have been provided since it was first announced last year.
The Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie doesn’t currently have a release date.
