X-Men: The Animated Series has just been given a modern trailer by Disney+. The streaming service is now home to every episode of the beloved 90s show. But the series has been off the air for more than 20 years and, as such, Disney felt it was time to give it a little update. So, they have released an “official unofficial trailer.” Have a look.
Despite the 90s animation the trailer does have a modern feel to it. The way it’s assembled helps cement why the show remains so popular and thematically relevant to this day. It is filled with big X-Men moments from Wolverine, Gambit, Storm, Jubilee, Professor X, Cyclops and more. Really, the only thing that is missing is the classic theme song that plays over the show’s credits. Instead of a guitar-heavy soundtrack, we get more of a traditional movie score here.
Disney+ released the trailer with a new synopsis as well, which reads as follows.
“In a divided world, those who are different are faced with a choice: use their mutant powers for good, or for evil. Watch Professor Charles Xavier, Jubilee, Wolverine, and the rest of the team in this reimagined trailer for X-Men: The Animated Series.”
X-Men: The Animated Series debuted in 1992 at a time when Marvel was not the powerhouse entertainment brand it is today. It was also nearly a decade before the original X-Men film would change the landscape of superhero movies as we know it. It ran for five seasons through 1997, with a total of 76 episodes produced. But its legacy has endured far beyond its original run on TV.
With so many classic TV shows being revived, fans have called in recent years for Disney to do the same here. Nothing has officially happened on that front but series producer and director Larry Houston did reveal over the summer that some discussions have taken place on that front.
“We’ve had talks, but that’s about it,” Houston said Friday during a virtual Wizard World panel. “We’ve made conversation and it’s up to them to make the decision, but we’ve let them know that we’re all available for whatever they want to do in the future.”
The ball is firmly in Disney’s court at this point.
X-Men: The Animated Series is streaming now on Disney+.
