Harley Quinn Animated Series Heading to HBO Max

Yet another DC Universe show is jumping ship. As reported by Collider, the Harley Quinn animated series is making its way to HBO Max. The recently launched streaming service has become the main hub for DC related content. As such, the acclaimed show’s first two seasons will soon be available for subscribers.

No release date has been announced as of this writing. It does, however, open up questions about the future of DC Universe. That streaming service launched in 2018 and was meant to service hardcore DC fans. But as WarnerMedia shifted strategies, making a larger play with HBO Max, their attention to DC Universe has dwindled.

What’s more, Harley Quinn was already licensed to Syfy, not to mention that Swamp Thing, which was canceled after one season, will air on The CW this summer. The network also plays host to Stargirl, which was intended as a DC Universe exclusive. The only show that remains wholly exclusive to DC Universe is Titans, since Doom Patrol season 2 also debuted on HBO Max.

The Harley Quinn animated series debuted in November 2019 and has aired two seasons so far. It stars Kaley Cuoco as the titular character. Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches, J.B. Smoove, Jason Alexander, Wanda Sykes, Giancarlo Esposito, Natalie Morales, Jim Rash, Diedrich Bader, Tony Hale and Christopher Meloni round out the voice cast.

Here is the official synopsis for Harley Quinn season 2

“Harley Quinn has taken down the Joker and Gotham City is finally hers for the taking…whatever’s left of it that is. Gotham has become a desolate wasteland, left in ruins, following the huge earthquake caused by the collapse of Joker’s tower. Harley’s celebration in this newly created chaos is cut short when Penguin, Bane, Mr. Freeze, The Riddler, and Two-Face join forces to restore order in the criminal underworld. Calling themselves the Injustice League, this group now stands in the way of Harley and her crew from taking sole control of Gotham as the top villains of the city.”

Another question right now is whether or not the Harley Quinn animated series will get a third season. So far, critics and viewers alike seem to love it, as it holds an 88 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Having high-value exclusive content for streaming services is key. Even if DC Universe folds, it’s not hard to imagine season 3 getting the green light at HBO Max.

So what do you think? Is this the right move for HBO Max? Do you think DC Universe is going to last much longer? Join in on the conversation over on Facebook or Twitter
