Black Widow Trailer Arrives from Marvel

The first Black Widow trailer is here. Marvel revealed a little surprise for fans as they’ve finally given us a teaser for what will ultimately be the first movie in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This serves as Scarlett Johansson’s first solo movie in the MCU and, for many fans, it’s something that’s long overdue. Though, based on the trailer, it looks like it may well have been worth the wait. Have a look.

As we can see, there is an awful lot going on here. We get the reveal of Florence Pugh as Yelena, aka Natasha’s sister. We’ve also got David Harbour as Red Guardian, who is more or less the Russian answer to Captain America. And there’s Rachel Weisz, who we still only know as Melina and remains something of a mystery. There is lots of action and quite a few intriguing shots that, for now, can only be speculated upon, since Marvel hasn’t released much in the way of a synopsis. What we know for sure is that it takes place after Captain America: the Civil War and before Infinity War. For now, this is all Marvel has to offer on that front.

“Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow in Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller Black Widow — the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour as Alexei aka The Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as Melina.”

One of the most important elements of the Black Widow trailer is the reveal of Taskmaster, who is set to be the main villain. For better or for worse, Taskmaster’s look is pretty tame here and is lacking many of the essential elements from the comics, such as the cape, skull mask and orange/blue flare. Perhaps the costume will be beefed up in other sequences we’re not seeing just yet? It’s also important to mention we don’t yet know who is under the mask and there has been much speculation that we could be in for a gender-swap. Maybe it’s Weisz under the mask?

Cate Shortland is directing, working from a screenplay by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson. Shortland will be the first woman to helm an MCU movie on her own. Anna Boden previously co-directed Captain Marvel with Ryan Fleck.

“I can’t wait to share it with everybody,” Johansson said on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in speaking about the film. “It was fantastic. I mean, I’m partial, but I’m pretty excited about. Honestly, it brought a closure to me that I needed. Yeah, ’cause I was kind of wiped out in that last one, emotionally and literally.”

Black Widow hits theaters on May 1, 2020.
