Good news, DC fans! A new video game based on the world of DC Comics is in the works! The bad news? It isn't even remotely clear in the slightest what this game is, what characters it will include, how far along in the development stage it is or when we'll see it. But it's been a while since we had a proper, DC-based platformer to enjoy, so this is still welcome news. Now the question becomes, what exactly is coming our way?
First, here's what we do know. The news surfaced over on Twitter in a roundabout way. Writer/designer Sarah Longthorne shared a post asking creatives to share information on what projects they're currently working on. In reply, someone going by the name of Osama Drama, who serves as a developer at Warner Bros. Games Montreal, stepped in to reveal he's working on a DC game. Check out the exchange.
That is all frustratingly vague, yet inescapably clear. Warner Bros. Games Montreal previously developed Batman: Arkham Origins, which proved to be rather divisive amongst the fanbase. The last time the studio released anything substantial was some DLC for Batman: Arkham Knight, but that was way back in 2015.
In the years since, the studio, with few details, informed the public that they were working on not one, but two different DC video games. However, virtually no details have come about since then. So this tweet, small as it may be, is the first real development we've had regarding a new DC game from Warner Bros in some time.
As for what it might be? That's a great question. The obvious answer would seem to be a new entry in the Batman: Arkham series, which has proved to be incredibly popular. Since the launch of the series a decade ago in 2009, the games have been incredibly well-received (generally speaking) and have sold like gangbusters. So, it would stand to reason that Warner Bros. would want to go with the hot hand. Batman, when it comes to DC, is always the hot hand.
The other option here is that Warner Bros. could be getting ahead of the curve a bit by developing a video game for director Matt Reeves' movie The Batman, which begins filming early next year. Video games take a long time to make and, if they plan on doing such a tie-in, the gears would need to be in motion soon, if they aren't already. The other option is a Superman game. There is the famously terrible Superman Nintendo 64 game, but the Man of Steel truly deserves a solid modern console game. Why not now? The property certainly doesn't seem to be doing anything on the big screen. Might as well make use of Clark Kent somewhere.
For now, all we can do is hopelessly speculate. But this is good news. Something is happening. A DC video game is, as we speak, being worked on. Now comes the hard part, waiting.
So what do you think? Any guesses on what this game will be? Or any suggestions as to what it should be? Sound off in the comments!
