Many fans believe that a particular scene in Avengers: Endgame teased Namor the Sub-Mariner. But unfortunately, the movie's writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely don't think that is that case.
A scene in Endgame finds Black Widow in a holographic conference with Nebula, Rocket Raccoon, Okoye, Captain Marvel, and War Machine. At one point during the scene, Nat asks Okoye, "You get a reading on those tremors?" In response, Okoye says, "It was a mild subduction under the African plate." Scarlet Johansson's character further asks, "Do we have a visual? How are we handling it?" Danai Gurira's character responds, "Nat, it’s an earthquake under the ocean. We handle it by not handling it."
According to many fans, this earthquake under the ocean near Wakanda is a tease for Namor, who is speculated to be the main antagonist of Black Panther 2. Endgame writers Markus and McFeely have debunked the theory in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked about the potential Easter Egg, Markus said, "I wish we were that smart."
In an earlier interview, however, directors Anthony and Joe Russo had played coy about the particular Endgame scene hinting at the Sub-Mariner. When it was addressed during their interview with Happy Sad Confused podcast, Joe slyly remarked, "Maybe." Then, Anthony added, "Some people may interpret it that way." Joe concluded by saying, "It could just be an earthquake."
Even though the Endgame writers didn't mean to tease Namor with that scene, Ryan Coogler can still exploit it if he wants to introduce the Atlantean in Black Panther 2. Chloe Zhao could also make use of it in The Eternals, according to a theory put forward by MCU Cosmic. Let's see if either of those movies addresses the earthquake.
