If a new report is to be believed, Bryan Singer is no longer attached to direct the Red Sonja reboot.
Almost six months ago, Millennium Films hired Bryan Singer to direct a live-action movie centering on Red Sonja from a script penned by Ashley Edward Miller. Singer, who has called the shots on four X-Men installments, seemed like a truly remarkable choice for the gig at that time. But we could no longer feel that enthusiastic about his involvement in the project when he was accused in an Atlantic magazine article earlier this year of sexually assaulting under-aged boys.
Nine out of ten times such serious allegations would cost someone all of their active projects right away in today's Me Too era. Singer's case, however, was an exception; he saw Millennium boss Avi Lerner coming to his rescue instead. Dismissing the story as agenda-driven fake news, Lerner asserted that he had no intentions of firing the filmmaker from the Red Sonja reboot. He also claimed that he was very comfortable with the particular decision.
But he couldn't be that comfortable for long. Around two weeks later, we came across the news that the reboot had been put on the back burner. Now, The Hollywood Reporter suggests in one of its latest pieces that Singer has been, after all, fired from the solo outing for the She-Devil with a Sword. Lerner was forced to make the decision when he failed to secure a domestic distributor for the project.
It's unclear at the moment whether Millennium is still planning to move forward with the Red Sonja reboot. But if it does, the film company might want to consider replacing Bryan Singer with Amber Tamblyn. The 35-year-old actress who made her directorial debut in 2016 with Netflix's Paint It Black has already begun campaigning for the gig. Check out her tweets below!
