With filming expected to start in September, the Hellboy reboot has been shaping up its cast roster. The movie recently cast David Harbour as the titular superhero, Ian McShane as his adoptive father, and Milla Jovovich as the big baddie.
The latest addition to the list is Sasha Lane, who made her big-screen debut in 2017's critically acclaimed and award-winning American Honey. According to The Hollywood Reporter and several other outlets, she will portray the comic books’ Alice Monaghan.
Mike Mignola introduced Alice in the comic book The Corpse, as an infant who was kidnapped by fairies to be raised as their own. Hellboy rescued her, but she’d spent enough time with the fairies to retain some paranormal gifts. As she grew up, she became his love interest.
Neither of Guillermo del Toro’s movies about the well-meaning demon featured Alice. So the reboot will be her live-action cinematic debut. The character is of Irish descent in the comics, so the movie is obviously revamping her.
Splash Report recently reported that Alice Monaghan and others would appear in the Hellboy reboot. According to the website, Alice will be a member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. She has the ability to "hear dead people”, and will "use the Spirit Wrack" in the movie.
Abe Sapien and Major Ben Daimio are the remaining members of the BPRD. Daimio is a "rugged military type with cold, calculating eyes, close-cropped hair, and three jagged scars raked across his grizzled face”.
The website didn’t provide any details about the location of BPRD headquarters beyond that it will be situated on "a snow-capped mountainside". Inside, we’ll see arcane artifacts that include "cryptid skeletons, freakish things encased in formaldehyde, period weapons, [and] the symbol of a hand holding a sword with the words: IN ABSENTIA LUCI, TENEBRAE VINCIUNT”.
A pig-like fairy creature named Gruagach will appear in the reboot as "a vengeful adversary" who blames Hellboy for his current state. Other characters include Baba Yaga the Witch, King Arthur, and Merlin .
The Neil Marshall flick will also feature "some creatures of darkness". One of them has giant tentacles that, at one point, wrap themselves around the London Bridge. The website further reported that the movie will be as dark and gruesome as suggested previously by one of the scribes. It will be full of "cool" action sequences that include, among other things, "severed heads". Toward the end, the movie will indicate who Anung Un Rama will go after next, leaving it "wide open for a sequel".
