A big-screen appearance by Marvel comics favorite Cable is long overdue. We believe that he hasn't been introduced in the X-Men movies because he has a complicated backstory that involves clones, time travel, mad scientists, and even Apocalypse. But now, he’ll be brought to life in Deadpool 2, with none other than Josh Brolin in the role.
Of course, some questions remain. Will the character stay true to the comics? And what about Cable's abilities, which dwarf those of many other mutants? Recent pics from the set revealed that he can jump great distances, so we can safely say that some tweaks are being made.
Cable and Deadpool (Den of Geek)
During an interview with Screen Rant, Ryan Reynolds provided no answers to our questions about Cable’s powers or backstory. But when asked about Cable’s abilities in general, Reynolds left the door open for time-travel stories:
It is possible. Your answers will all be, they'll be soon. They'll be coming soon.
We know that Brolin's character is a time-traveler. However, we don’t know whether Deadpool 2 will showcase this ability or how it will affect the story. But this is an opportunity that should be explored as soon as possible, since it would provide continuity between two of the best X-Men movies to date, namely Deadpool and Logan.
And since Logan takes place in a future in which Mutants are all but extinct, this could be the Logan connection. Sure, Cable's history is much more complex than that, but it’s still a starting point.
Cable and Hope (Comic Vine)
Production for Deadpool 2 was delayed due to the recent on-set death of stuntwoman SJ Harris, but filming has since resumed. The movie is scheduled for a June 1, 2018 release.
