12 Years a Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor is now rumored to be cast in the upcoming Doctor Strange. So far, Benedict Cumberbatch remains the only confirmed actor, tasked to portray Stephen Strange, the lead character of the movie.
Scott Derrickson's forthcoming film has already stirred up a bunch of speculations. Marvel has reportedly reached out to Ken Watanabe, Bill Nighy and Morgan Freeman for the Ancient One. Al Pacino himself was rumored to have drawn Marvel's attention. Now, the rumor mill puts Chiwetel Ejiofor in the limelight.
Chiwetel Ejiofor 's role in Doctor Strange
Should rumors stick and we get to see Chiwetel Ejiofor play in Doctor Strange, well, that would be a precious addition to the cast. And we can't help but wonder: what role will he play? Will he impersonate a chief character? Will he bring the villain to the big screen? Is he one of the contenders for the Ancient One?
All scenarios are equally plausible. Chiwetel Ejiofor could easily play the Ancient One: who's to say that in a world packed with magic an elder character can't look younger than his real age?
And then there's Wong, the manservant of Chinese descent. Scott Derrickson's adaptation of the comic book could do away with the canonical lineage of Wong, and easily see Chiwetel Ejiofor impersonating the assistant.
Villainous characters are not ruled out for Ejiofor, so Baron Mordo is a possibility. He's the main antagonist: enemy of both the Ancient One and Doctor Strange, he's the one that puts the world's balance in danger, perhaps by order of Dormammu.
Speaking of Dormammu, this might be in the cards for Chiwetel Ejiofor. In this case, 12 Years a Slave star will only lend his voice to the flaming demon, with no actual physical appearance of the actor.
Or, perhaps, Ejiofor will portray Brother Voodoo, one of the Doctor Strange's main allies. Brother Voodoo - at least as featured by the comic book - has a winding development, with momentary slips to the dark side.
