DC’s Supergirl Is A Streaming Success After Bombing At The Box Office

Milly Alcock as Supergirl flying

Supergirl may have majorly underperformed at the box office, but it’s doing big numbers on streaming. The latest movie in the DC Universe recently made its debut on HBO Max. It turns out, audiences were pretty curious to check out Milly Alcock’s solo debut as the Girl of Steel. It quickly became a major hit for the streaming service.

As of this writing, Supergirl is the number one movie on HBO Max. It’s earned more than twice as much viewing as the next-biggest movie on the platform. That movie is Practical Magic, which people are catching up with thanks to Practical Magic 2 now being in theaters. Whether or not the streaming success is enough to make up for the lackluster performance remains to be seen. At the very least, it’s an impressive consolation prize.

To say that the new Supergirl movie was a disappointment commercially would be an understatement. Against a huge $170 million budget, it made just $126 million at the box office. It was also met with mixed reviews from critics. Warner Bros. and DC Studios had very high hopes ahead of release. It was the follow-up to last summer’s Superman, which kicked off the new DCU on a successful note. It didn’t go as well as everyone had hoped.

Here is the synopsis for Supergirl.

“When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”

The cast also includes Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze and Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll. Craig Gillespie (Cruella, Dumb Money) directed the movie.

Alcock’s Supergirl is expected to be a big part of the new DCU. She’s part of the cast of director James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, which is due to hit theaters next summer. So, even though the movie bombed at the box office, it’s undoubtedly encouraging for WB and DC to see it finding success on HBO Max. At the very least, audiences will be more familiar with her character, even if it wasn’t through ticket sales.

Looking ahead, next month will see the release of the R-rated Clayface movie. It’s a lower budget movie based on the Batman villain of the same name. That means there is less pressure on it to perform. Beyond that, there are several movies in development including a new Wonder Woman, The Brave and the Bold and Teen Titans, among others.

Supergirl is also available on VOD, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.
