The live-action Booster Gold TV show just took a major step forward at DC Studios. The series has been in the works for several years, dating back to the initial DC Universe slate announcement in early 2023. Formal updates have been few and far between. Now though, a writer has been hired to bring Michael Carter to life.
According to Deadline, David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death) has been brought on board to write the pilot for the Booster Gold TV series. The project is in the works for HBO and HBO Max. Should things move forward, it’s expected that Jenkins would also be brought on as the showrunner. Plot details for the show currently remain under wraps.
The new DC Universe kicked off late last year with the release of the animated Creature Commandos. However, it got going in earnest with the release of James Gunn’s Superman in theaters earlier this month. That movie has been off to a solid start at the box office. It has given Warner Bros. and the team at DC Studios confidence to proceed with several other projects. This could be the next live-action series given the green light as part of the new DC Universe. The first one in that category is Lanterns, which is due to arrive on HBO and HBO Max in 2026. Other live-action shows in the works include Waller and Paradise Lost, in addition to Peacemaker season 2.
“Interestingly, Booster was the MOST requested character when I asked people on Mastodon what character they’d most like to see on screen. I’m not creating stories by public vote, but I found it fascinating nevertheless,” Gunn said on Twitter in November 2022. The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker, who serves as the co-head of DC Studios, described Booster Gold as follows when it was announced in 2023.
“Booster Gold is one of comics’ really popular cult heroes. He is a fascinating guy. He’s a loser from the future who uses future technology to come back to present day and become a superhero so that people will love him. It is basically the superhero story of imposter syndrome.”
First appearing in the pages of DC Comics in 1986, this is a character who has long been destined for bigger things in live-action. Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti was developing a Booster Gold movie for years before it fell apart. Since the shows are connected to the DCU movies, whoever gets cast as Michael Carter would inevitably have a future on the big screen, in addition to the show.
Booster Gold doesn’t currently have a release date.
