It’s been a long time coming, but The Batman Part II, at long last, seems to be headed in the right direction. Director Matt Reeves has been hard at work on the script for literally years at this point. However, he recently turned in a first draft to Warner Bros. and DC Studios. Now, DC Studios co-head and Superman director James Gunn has weighed in on the script.
Speaking with Deadline on the red carpet for Superman, Gunn provided his simple two-word reaction to the script. “It’s great,” Gunn said before walking away. So there we have it! It’s not much but after literally years of waiting for any substantial information regarding this sequel, this is certainly better than nothing.
Reeves previously said that the sequel is “going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one.” Aside from that and the fact that Robert Pattinson will once again be returning to play the Caped Crusader, virtually nothing else has been confirmed. We still don’t have any concrete plot details. We also don’t know who the villain is going to be. But with the script now in DC’s hands, those details may be coming sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, Gunn and his partner Peter Safran are in the midst of rebooting the DC Universe. Superman is the first big piece of that puzzle. As for Batman, right now Pattinson isn’t expected to play the part in the new DCU. The plan is for The Brave and the Bold movie to introduce a new Batman. Plans could certainly change but so far as anyone has said publicly, Reeves’ universe will remain its own thing.
“Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it,” Gunn previously said to Entertainment Weekly. “People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
The Batman was a massive hit both critically and commercially in 2022, taking in $772 million at the global box office. But that was before Gunn and Safran took over as the heads of DC Studios. That complicated matters slightly behind the scenes at Warner Bros. Not to mention the Hollywood strikes in 2023, which further delayed the sequel. After all of that, things finally seem to be headed in the right direction.
“The Batman Part II” is currently set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
