Shredder may be the arch nemesis of the Ninja Turtles but he’s about to take the spotlight for himself. That’s because the folks at IDW Publishing have announced that the legendary villain is getting his very own solo series. Get ready for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder this summer.
The news of this new monthly comic was first revealed by the folks at IGN. The new monthly series is set to debut in August with Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns) writing and Michele Bandini (Spider-Man: City at War) set to handle the artwork. We’ve also got a look at several variant covers for the first issue for you to check out below. This book will take place in the same universe as writer Jason Aaron’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, which launched last year.
Here is the synopsis for TMNT: Shredder.
“Prepare for the rags-to-revenge story of the ultimate ronin. Returned forever changed by a maddening ordeal beyond imagining, betrayed by all around him, and no longer with the Foot Clan, Shredder will quest deep into New York’s criminal underworld as a former protege has formed their own rival clan with sinister plans for the city. In his deadly mission for vengeance, enemies both old and new will brutally discover what defiance will bring them at the end of the Shredder’s blades.”
This new series comes at a huge time for the heroes in a half-shell. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was a massive success. Paramount launched a spin-off TV series, with a sequel due to hit theaters next year. Mikey, Raph, Donnie and Leo were also part of a recent crossover event in Call of Duty. So Shredder getting his own series right now feels appropriate. Waters had this to say about the series.
“The bad guys always have the best stories, and Shredder is no exception. This story is Shredder on a quest of revenge – rejecting the gods and allegiances he’s made over his long and storied history, reminding New York exactly why it feared him so much – and why it should do so again. This is the kind of character I love to write. Driven, ruthless, and crawling his way back to the top with a new purpose. This is going to be a hell of a ride.”
“I’m from the ‘80s, so I grew up with TMNT and I always wished to have the chance to work on one of their books since I was little kid. Yup, I wanted to be a comic book artist since I was five years old, and my favourite characters have always been the fun-loving Michelangelo and the ruthless ninja master, Shredder,” Bandini added. “A revenge story with one of the coolest characters ever created? I can’t wait to see Shredder get back what he deserves: the crown of the deadliest villain New York has ever seen!”
In other TMNT news, Paramount is also working on an R-rated movie based on The Last Ronin. On that same front, The Last Ronin is being turned into a video game as well. Unfortunately, updates on that front have been few and far between ever since it was first announced a couple of years back.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #1 hits shelves on August 13.
