Superman Trailer: Welcome To James Gunn’s New DC Universe

Superman (2025) - Warner Bros.

A new era of the DC Universe is officially upon us. Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director James Gunn’s Superman. Coming next summer, this is the first movie of the DC Studios era. The DCEU, aka the Snyderverse, ended last year with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. What comes next? The man behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is putting his stamp on the Man of Steel. More than that, he and producer Peter Safran are spearheading the new DCU. This is our first true taste of this new era. Check it out.

The trailer offers our first real taste of the new Superman, played by David Corenswet (Twisters, Pearl). We also get a sense of what Gunn is bringing to the table. This looks to be in stark contrast to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, which kicked off the DCEU in 2013. There is a lot riding on this as Gunn and Safran have big plans for both the movie and TV side of DC in the years that come. But if this doesn’t work, who knows? For now though, there appears to be a great deal of anticipation around this project.

Here is the synopsis for Superman.

“In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

The new DC Universe technically kicked off the release of the animated Creature Commandos on Max. That said, Superman is the first true test of what audiences are in for with this new vision. In the coming years, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, The Brave and the Bold, The Authority and Teen Titans, among others, are being put together for the big screen. On the TV side, we have Lanterns, Waller, Peacemaker, Booster Gold and more in development. Again, there’s a lot riding on this.

For what it’s worth, Superman is one of the most-anticipated movies of 2025 overall. And the movie earned that distinction even before the trailer dropped. With this trailer out in the world, the movie’s stock can go up from here. The question is, can Gunn do for DC’s biggest superhero what he did for Marvel’s wildly obscure Guardians of the Galaxy? Time will tell.

The cast is led by David Corenswet as well as Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Lex Luthor. The film also stars Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind), Anthony Carrigan (Barry, Gotham), Nathan Fillion (The Suicide Squad), Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus), Skyler Gisondo (Booksmart), Sara Sampaio (At Midnight), María Gabriela de Faría (The Moodys), Wendell Pierce (Selma, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Alan Tudyk (Creature Commandos), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box) and Neva Howell (Greedy People).

Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
