James Gunn has debunked a major rumor about the new DC Universe. Gunn, best known as the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, is now the co-head of DC Studios. Alongside producer Peter Safran, he will be guiding a reboot of DC on screen beginning later this year when Creature Commandos arrives on Max. It begins more earnestly next summer when Gunn’s new Superman movie hits theaters. What comes after that? We know for sure it won’t be an adaptation of Justice League: The New Frontier.
Recently, rumors cropped up regarding a movie adaptation of the storyline. It started in the pages of DC Comics from writer/artist Darwyn Cooke. Titled DC: The New Frontier, it centered on members of the Justice League in the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s. It was later turned into an animated movie titled Justice League: The New Frontier. Gunn recently took to Threads to address a fan question about the alleged movie, which the executive quickly shot down.
“Nope sorry. No truth to this whatsoever. That said I love New Frontier and its magical alternate history is a big influence on DC Studios.”
The new DC Universe will truly be new. David Corenswet is our new Superman. The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman. We will also be getting a new Wonder Woman. Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II will exist elsewhere in the multiverse. In any event, it seems Gunn and Safran will be building some sort of new Justice League. It just won’t be a New Frontier version of DC’s famed superhero team.
Here is the synopsis for Justice League: The New Frontier.
“Based on Darwyn Cooke’s award-winning graphic novel, this thrilling adventure reveals the origin of the Justice League. With Cold War paranoia putting Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman under government suspicion, only the gravest threat imaginable can force these heroes – along with an army of newcomers including The Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter – to unite in a spectacular showdown to save the world.”
The new DC Universe will also include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, The Authority, Teen Titans and The Brave and the Bold on the movie side. TV shows in development include Lanterns, Booster Gold, Waller, Paradise Lost and Peacemaker season 2. These are just the main projects that have been announced to be in development. Gunn has also made it clear that plans may change and nothing will go into production until the scripts are ready.
Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
