Marvel’s Wolverine Game Quietly Hit With A Major Setback

Marvel's Wolverine - Insomniac Games

Even though it was announced three years ago, it seems like Marvel’s Wolverine game is still a ways away from release. Insomniac Games, the company behind Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequel, is developing the title. Unfortunately, there was a creative shuffle behind the scenes that resulted in Wolverine losing its director. Whether or not that will cause a delay in a planned release date is unknown. Though setbacks like this aren’t known for making things happen faster, that’s for sure.

In a new report by Game File, It was confirmed that Wolverine creative director Brian Horton is no longer on the project. It’s said that he’s been off of it since the summer. The game is now being helmed by Marcus Smith, which was confirmed by a representative for Sony Interactive Entertainment. Mike Daly, it’s said, will serve as the new game director. Horton has moved on and is the new creative director of the Xbox title Perfect Dark.

Marvel’s Wolverine was first announced during the PlayStation Showcase in 2021. A brief teaser was shown, which featured Logan sitting at a bar. Updates have been few and far between ever since. It was later confirmed that the game shares a universe with Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 games. That could provide a lot of opportunity down the line. Crossover, anyone?

Mike Fitzgerald, Core Technology Director at Insomniac Games, did recently confirm that they plan to take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s features when it comes to Wolverine.

“We’ve released four games for PlayStation 5, and we’re excited to be enhancing all four to take advantage of the new capabilities available to us on the PS5 Pro. Players of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will find a new default Performance Pro mode, which marries the crisp 4K resolution and ray tracing features of Fidelity mode with the speedy 60 frames per second of Performance mode. These are incredible no-compromises experiences we know fans will love, and we’re excited to spend even more time finding new ways we can leverage PS5 Pro on both these existing titles and future games like Marvel’s Wolverine.”

Aside from Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, Marvel has been searching for a hit in the video game department. Marvel’s Avengers in 2020 was a commercial disaster for developer Square Enix. 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy game was met with very strong reviews, but didn’t quite live up to high sales expectations.

Aside from this title, Marvel has announced a new Iron Man video game from EA’s Motive. A new Blade game is also in development, however, both of these titles are still likely years away. Unfortunately, that’s become the pattern with these AAA games. They get announced and it takes a long, long time for people to get their hands on them.

Marvel’s Wolverine does not currently have a release date.
