Even though the DC Universe is headed for a reboot, Wonder Woman 3 appears to be in the cards. Gal Gadot has revealed that a third film in the franchise is apparently set to be developed at Warner Bros. It sounds like Gadot will help develop the film alongside DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Gadot made the reveal in a recently published interview with Comicbook.com. The interview was conducted by the current SAG-AFTRA strike that has Hollywood’s actors not working at the moment. Asked about the status of Wonder Woman now that Gunn and Safran are in charge, Gadot shared a somewhat surprising update.
“I love portraying Wonder Woman. It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together.”
The reason this is surprising is that previous reports indicated that Wonder Woman 3 was not moving forward at DC Studios. Perhaps that just means that Patty Jenkins will no longer be directing. Maybe it means that whatever version Jenkins and Gadot were developing is being abandoned. Whatever the case, at least for now, it sounds like Gadot’s days as Diana Prince aren’t numbered just yet.
Following the releases of Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the films from the previous regime will all be out in the world. From that point on, it’s a new, cohesive DC Universe that is being shaped by Gunn and Safran. That will begin, in earnest, with Superman: Legacy in 2025. Interestingly, part of the upcoming slate includes a show called Paradise Lost. It will deal with the Amazons and Wonder Woman’s world, but probably not directly with Diana Prince.
One thing that seems certain is that Warner Bros. is ready to move on from the past with DC. Both Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash bombed in theaters this year. Black Adam disappointed last year, and the pandemic was rough as well. Both The Suicide Squad and, more importantly, Wonder Woman 1984 suffered theatrically due to Covid. While the first Wonder Woman was a huge hit, the sequel only made $169 million worldwide because of its HBO Max release. It was also met with heavily mixed reviews. At this point, we’re getting a new Superman and a new Batman. Would Gunn and Safran keep the same Wonder Woman? We’ll see.
Wonder Woman 3 does not currently have a release date.
