Spider-Man: Homecoming Director Confirms that Venom is “Not Connected” to the MCU!

Sony Pictures recently announced their live-action standalone movie for Venom, the iconic Spider-Man nemesis. Later, a report surfaced online suggesting that the studio is also doing a Black Cat/Silver Sable movie. This activity is an indication that the studio’s dreams of sculpting a complete Spider-Man universe haven’t faded away. But the big question that remains is whether these movies will have any connection with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Rumors have suggested that neither movie will be part of the MCU, but we still need confirmation from Sony or Marvel Studios. While the studios have been silent, Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts hasn't. During a recent interview, Fandango asked the director whether the Venom movie would have any connections to his July 7, 2017 release at all. His response:

It’s not. It’s not connected to the Marvel world, so that’s really intriguing…what that will be. I don’t know anything about it. It’s not connected, so there’s not that overlap. I’m only focused on my movie right now.

Variety caught up with Tom Holland at CinemaCon and asked whether he will show up as Peter Parker in either the Venom movie or the Black Cat/Silver Sable movie. His response:

I have no idea. I haven’t read a script. I haven’t seen any sort of concept art, so that would be something I would decide on when I see material.

While Venom is scheduled to roll into theaters on October 5, 2018, Sony hasn't announced a release date for the Black Cat/Silver Sable movie. Neither movie has a director yet, but the former has writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, and the latter has writer Chris Yost. According to Collider, the studio wants Venom to snatch an R-rating. Since they're eyeing a fall 2017 start for both movies’ production, we can expect to hear about further developments in the coming months.
