Wonder Woman 1984 is still going to arrive in theaters this Christmas. At least for now. According to a recent interview with Variety, Warner Bros.’ chair-CEO Ann Sarnoff , the studio still intends to release the highly-anticipated sequel before the year’s end. But that could change and, based on the criteria, another delay seems likely.
Per Variety, “Sarnoff said as of now, Warner Bros. is committed to seeing its next tentpole, ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ land in theaters on Christmas Day. But the studio will have to watch conditions in the U.S. closely before making the final call because ‘Wonder Woman’ is expected to skew more to the domestic market than ‘Tenet.’
“It really is about how the U.S. continues to open, and whether there are any other surges. We’ve got a little bit of time to figure that out,” Sarnoff said.
Wonder Woman, released in 2017, was a turning point for DC Films. Not only was it met with widespread critical acclaim, but the film earned a stunning $822 million worldwide. However, more than half of that total, $412 million, was earned at the domestic box office. That is not the case with most superhero movies. As such, Warner Bros. expects theaters in North America to play a big role in the sequel’s earning potential. But as they saw with Tenet, moviegoers are not flocking to theaters right now. It has made just $52 million domestically since its rollout in August. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising another delay pushing it into 2021 is announced.
Wonder Woman 1984 sees the return of Gal Gadot in the leading role, with Patty Jenkins returning to the director’s chair. It also stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as The Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Max Lord, Robin Wright as Antiope, and Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta.
Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot and Stephen Jones are producing the film. Rebecca Steel Roven Oakley, Richard Suckle, Marianne Jenkins, Geoff Johns, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong Vo and Wesley Coller are the executive producers.
Patty Jenkins directed from a screenplay she wrote with Geoff Johns and David Callaham. Behind the scenes, the movie has director of photography Matthew Jensen, Oscar-nominated production designer Aline Bonetto (Amélie), and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (Topsy-Turvy). Oscar-nominated editor Richard Pearson (United 93) is cutting the film. The music is by Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk, The Lion King).
Wonder Woman 1984 is set to hit theaters on December 25.
