Following the success of both Deadpool movies, an R-rated X-Force makes sense. After all, Ryan Reynolds teased such a project ever since he proved that R-rated comic book movies work. Drew Goddard was hired to pen and direct X-Force, which was announced to start shooting this October.
However, even if the movie has been announced and is a couple of months away from principal photography, it doesn't mean that it will happen. And that is because of the Disney/Fox merger, which saw all the Fox owned Marvel characters returning to Marvel Studios.
This kind of a change surely has an impact on all planned X-Men movies. After all, we all assume that Dark Phoenix and New Mutants weren't delayed just for some reshoots.
Nonetheless, fans (and not only, as you will see) still believe that a raunchy, R-rated X-Force will be released. And that even if Disney (a family friendly company) owns the characters.
Rob Liefeld, co-creator of Deadpool, believed it will happen. Even more, he also seems to know what villain the movie will feature! Check out what he said, during an interview with Nerdist:
"Well, do you really hire Josh Brolin if you don't want him to play both roles? We are perfectly assembled for an X-Force movie. And how do you not scratch that Stryfe itch, right?"
It does make sense. However, Cable's story in the film is not the same with the one from the comics. But, at the same time, what do we know about Josh Brolin's character's backstory? Not that much. So, with the right writer, Stryfe could be introduced as a major supervillain in the X-Men universe.
For the moment, the X-Force movie doesn't have a release date.
Given how much Dark Phoenix and New Mutants have been delayed, we guess we'll have to wait for a while until news about this project surfaces.
