Well before Wonder Woman came out, director Patty Jenkins said on a number of occasions that she knew the direction Diana Prince’s story would take in the future. At that time, negative rumors surrounded the movie. This appeared to be a marketing trick to attract fans to the movie on its opening weekend by indicating that the movie was so good that it deserved a sequel.
As the release date closed in, Warner Bros. confirmed that a sequel would happen, although they didn’t announce a release date. There were rumors that suggested that Wonder Woman 2 wouldn't happen until Batgirl’s release date in 2019 or 2020. We’re inclined to believe that after the first movie’s success, the studio will fast-track the second installment.
It’s no surprise that Patty Jenkins will return to direct Wonder Woman 2. With Warner Bros. taking the time to savor the first DC Extended Universe critical success, we can't expect to learn any details about the sequel anytime soon. In addition to mentioning that the next film wouldn't be another period piece, the director made an important revelation during an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
The story will take place in the US, which I think is right. She's Wonder Woman. She's got to come to America. It's time.
This should please fans who were wondering why Steve Trevor was Wonder Woman’s only US connection.
No matter which villain Patty Jenkins chooses for the next movie, it will be interesting to see how the story progresses in the US without the intervention of the other Justice League members and how their absence will be explained. After all, this has been a head scratcher in regard to the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that take place on Earth.
