While the character did appear in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, Venom offered so much more potential than just a glorified cameo in one of the worst Spider-Man flicks ever. Leaving aside the controversial casting of that guy from That "˜70's Show, his story arc wasn't enough to do him justice. And that is probably why the studio teased and announced Venom during the very brief Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
Those plans didn't work out though, since the Amazing movies weren't amazing at all. Then came the deal with Marvel and it was all soon forgotten. Until now, that is.
The Hollywood Reporter just announced that Sony hired Edge of Tomorrow screenwriter Dante Harper to write a script for a solo Venom movie. And by solo, we mean that it will stand apart and it will be completely unrelated to the Spider-Man from the MCU. And we really can't say how this will work out, since Venom and the web crawler are, basically, inseparable.
But there may be a way around this issue, since in this way the studio can produce a franchise based entirely on the supervillain/anti-hero, most likely being inspired by the success of Deadpool. And this opens up another opportunity, to have a Venom movie being R-rated.
We know that people believe right now that more R-rated superhero flicks will ruin the genre. We don't believe that, since this path could actually rejuvenate it.
Apparently, the deal between the studios has made a Venom movie more likely than before, when Spider-Man was the only superhero in his universe. In this way, Sony and its writers can find a proper way to tell the origin story of the character, one which involves actually going into deep space in the search of the symbiote. But this also means that it will be tricky to tell his story without appealing to the one character which made it all possible: Spider-Man.
What do you think, though?
