This is one of an increasing number of comic book TV shows not based on Marvel or DC properties. Netflix purchased Millarworld in 2017. The idea was they could use Mark Millar’s library of titles to turn them into franchises, be it as TV shows or movies. This represents the first time that has become a reality since the acquisition.
The show is executive produced by Mark Millar, Frank Quitely, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Dan McDermott, Steven S. DeKnight, James Middleton and Sang Kyu Kim. The cast includes Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, Ben Daniels, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade, Matt Lanter and Ian Quinlan.
Here’s the synopsis for Jupiter’s Legacy.
“After nearly a century of keeping mankind safe, the world’s first generation of superheroes must look to their children to continue the legacy. But tensions rise as the young superheroes, hungry to prove their worth, struggle to live up to their parents’ legendary public reputations — and exacting personal standards. Based on the graphic novels by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, Jupiter’s Legacy is an epic superhero drama that spans decades and navigates the complex dynamics of family, power, and loyalty.”
Millarworld jas several other properties being worked on by Netflix currently. They include The Magic Order, as well as American Jesus and Super Crooks. On the movie side, Reborn, Empress, Huck, Prodigy and Sharkey The Bounty Hunter are all in various stages of development.
“When my wife, Lucy, and I sold Millarworld to Netflix in 2017, our first priority was Jupiter’s Legacy. We had flirted with the idea of a movie, but Netflix afforded us the chance to make this adaptation as big and deep as it needed to be,” Millar said. “All those scribbled notes and Post-Its fully realised into a series that wouldn’t need to be condensed into a three-act film. Although I’ve seen cut after cut, I’ve never once grown tired of watching what this dream cast and crew have assembled. I hope you love it as much as I do.
There appears to be a disconnect between critics and audiences thus far. As of this writing, the show holds a 35 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. However, the audience rating is much better, sitting at 63 percent.
