More than two years later, Moon Knight is finally returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios first released the Moon Knight TV show on Disney+ in 2022. Unfortunately, it was a miniseries, meaning we have yet to see Oscar Isaac return as Marc Spector for another batch of episodes. Fans have clamored for Moon Knight season 2, but that has yet to materialize. As a bit of consolation, the latest trailer for What If…? season 3 has confirmed that the character is, indeed, making his return very soon. Check it out.
The trailer indeed showcases Moon Knight, albeit in a different form. As is always the case with What If…? nothing is as it seems. This will be an alternate reality version of the character. That said, it’s crystal clear from the voice over that this is Isaac back in the role. Certain characters have been replaced in the show, such as Black Widow being voiced by Lake Bell. But this is the real deal.
Here is the synopsis for What If…? season 3.
“Marvel’s animated series What If…? returns in Season 3 for its culminating adventure through the multiverse. Watch as classic characters make unexpected choices that will mutate their worlds into spectacular alternate versions of the MCU. The Watcher (voice of Jeffrey Wright) will guide viewers as the series traverses new genres, bigger spectacles, and incredible new characters.”
What If…? season 3 is going to be the final season of the show. So whether or not Isaac shows up in the MCU beyond this remains to be seen. Part of the issue is that Isaac’s contract with Marvel was just for one season. So, if they want him back, he would have a pretty great deal of say over what that looks like. Moon Knight was received very well critically, netting eight Emmy nominations that year. The series certainly left off in a place where Marc’s story could continue.
Marvel has been focused elsewhere though as the Multiverse Saga has continued to unfold. Marvel with several other shows coming to Disney+ in 2025, including Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel Zombies and Ironheart. If they want Isaac back for more, it would have to wait until at least 2026 at this point.
“There have been some specific conversations. They were pleasant,” Isaac said to Collider in 2022 regarding a possible second season of the show. “The spilling of the details it that there’s no details. We don’t know [if there will be a second season], but we’re talking about it. Truthfully, it’s about the story. Is there a story worth telling? Is it interesting? Will I feel embarrassed about it when it comes out? So it’s just about, is there something worth pouring everything you have into. And with Moon Knight, that was very much about that.”
What If…? season 3 premieres on Disney+ on December 22.
