The CW’s era of the DC Universe is officially over. Superman & Lois has aired its series finale. After four seasons, the show has wrapped up its run. With that, there are no more DC shows on the network. That means the ArrowVerse is dead. While this show wasn’t technically part of the ArrowVerse, it was part of that larger multiverse. Without getting caught up in the details, it’s the end of an important era.
Superman & Lois premiered on The CW in 2021. The series came about following Tyler Hoechlin’s debut as Superman on Supergirl. After some crossover events, the network decided to give him and Lois Lane a spin-off. After the network was sold, The CW canceled the series last year. Season 4 marked the end of its run. In total, the show ran for 54 episodes.
When The CW was sold to Nexstar, the company began scaling back on scripted programming. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. had already canceled other DC shows such as Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow. Meanwhile, Arrow wrapped up its eighth-season run in 2020. With the show that started this whole enterprise off the air, the writing seemed to be on the wall.
At the same time, Warner Bros. is getting ready to reboot the DC Universe. James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and producer Peter Safran are now the co-heads of DC Studios. They will oversee a new, interconnected universe that will include both movies and TV shows. Odds are, the powers that be don’t want competing universes as this all gets underway. Especially since Gunn’s Superman movie is hitting theaters next summer.
Here is the synopsis for Superman & Lois season 4.
“Season four of Superman & Lois picks up right where last season left off: with Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Luthor’s monster locked in a ferocious, moon-wrecking battle, as Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) fights for his life against the seemingly unstoppable creature. Back on the ground, General Lane (guest star Dylan Walsh) struggles to stay alive after being kidnapped by Luthor’s henchmen, while Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch), Jordan (Alex Garfin), and Jonathan (Michael Bishop) race against time to rescue him. But standing in their way is Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz) himself, who has permanently moved to Smallville as the next step in his malicious plan to destroy Lois Lane.”
On the TV side of the new DCU, Creature Commandos is the first official new show. It premieres on Max this month. Peacemaker season 2 is also on the way. Aside from that, Lanterns, Waller, Booster Gold and several other shows are currently in development. As of now, all of them are expected to debut on the Max streaming service, as opposed to a rival network.
Superman & Lois is available to watch on The CW’s website or through the network’s app.
