Anthony Mackie Wants to Play Blade; Talks Movie/TV Crossover for the MCU

While the MCU grows bigger every year, Marvel seems to have forgotten one of the first franchises to ever feature a Marvel superhero. Starring Wesley Snipes, the Blade franchise proved to be successful and well-received, despite the fact that the third installment was considered unworthy to be a part of an otherwise entertaining trilogy.

Although Wesley Snipes has expressed interest in returning to the biggest role of his career, nothing has actually happened, despite the fact that Kevin Feige said there were big plans in store for the character.

Anthony Mackie, who plays the MCU’s Falcon, talked about Blade and Wesley Snipes at the Wizard World Cleveland Convention. Despite his role in the shared universe, Mackie expressed his own interest in portraying the vampire hunter:

I pretty much want to grow up to be Wesley Snipes. If we can bring back Blade, I'd definitely be Blade in every Blade movie. (via Screen Rant)

Anthony Mackie (Science Fiction)

Would it be possible for the actor take on this role in addition to the one he already has? It’s unlikely. He’s portrayed Falcon in four movies so far, and for him to become Blade would cause confusion among casual moviegoers and hardcore fans alike, and necessitate pretty massive changes to the character itself.

The last time we heard anything about him was when Kate Beckinsale (the star of the Underworld franchise) teased the character's return. But Blade will return.

At the same convention, Anthony Mackie also talked about the possibility of a crossover between the big screen Marvel universe and the one on TV. This has been a hot topic, especially since Netflix/Marvel collaborations have proven to be hits with both fans and critics.

Unfortunately, Anthony Mackie said that there is no chance such a crossover will happen. Basically, according to the actor, they are completely different universes, even if the connections are clear:

Different universes, different worlds, different companies, different designs. Kevin Feige is very specific about how he wants the Marvel Universe to be seen in the film world. It wouldn't work. It wouldn't work at all. (via CBM)

So they are each a part of the MCU. However, the Netflix shows’ darkness and grittiness don’t fit Kevin Feige's plan. So, who knows? Maybe Mackie does have a shot at becoming Blade.
