Kara Zor-El is the main character of the upcoming CBS Supergirl series. Until a couple of days ago, the show was short of a leading lady. However, CBS has finally found an actress. No, not an actress, but the actress.
Let's remember CBS president Nina Tassler seemed to be very demanding about the qualities of the protagonist. In her words, "she's got to be an every woman. She's got to be specific. She's got to be a terrific actor. ["¦] someone who embodies both the freshness and the exuberance of being a young woman in today's challenging climate and being someone who can carry this kind of series on her shoulders".
But they've found her. Kara Zor-El now has a face. Read below to see who they decided on.
Glee star Melissa Benoist is Kara Zor-El
After due consideration, Supergirl bigwigs picked none other than Glee Star Melissa Benoist. Melissa Benoist is a latecomer to Glee, appearing in the 4th and 5th seasons of the said show, when she played Marley Rose. Now she's in the limelight. The Kara Zor-El she's going to play is a much more complex character.
According to the same Nina Tassler, the Kara Zor-El they want to portray is "a very strong, independent young woman. She's coming into her own. She's dealing with family issues. She's dealing with work issues. It's a female empowerment story. If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that"¦ We're big feminists. It's her intellect, it's her skill, it's her smarts. It's all of those elements. It's not just her strength, which she does have".
Conveying all these nuances could be a bit of a challenge for the future actress of Kara Zor-El. Well, fingers crossed and let's hope Benoist will pull off the intricate Kara Zor-El CBS president envisages. On that note, do you think Glee star is the best choice?
