It’s official: Creature Commandos season 2 is happening. DC Studios co-head James Gunn and Warner Bros. have confirmed that the animated series will be back for a second season on Max. The news comes just ahead of the show’s season one finale. Apparently, the brass has been happy with the results, as they were quick to give a new back of episodes the green light.
Creature Commandos, which premiered in December, is technically the start of the new DC Universe. Gunn and his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran are rebooting DC from top to bottom. That means new movies, TV shows and more. With the Snyderverse, aka the DCEU, concluding last year, it’s time for something new. That said, this show largely takes place in the universe established by Gunn in The Sucide Squad and Peacemaker. In a statement, Gunn and Safran had this to say about the show’s renewal.
“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem. From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”
Here is the synopsis for Creature Commandos.
“Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.”
This is just one very small piece of the puzzle for Gunn and Safran. They have grand plans for the new DCU that include an ambitious slate of new movies and TV shows. We’re getting a new Superman with David Corenswet. A new Batman will be cast. Gal Gadot will no longer be our Wonder Woman. It’s time for change. Though it’s just an animated show with relatively low stakes, Creature Commandos got the enterprise off to a good start.
Looking ahead, Gunn’s Superman movie will be the real test when it arrives next summer. The film’s first trailer took the internet by storm recently, signaling a great deal of interest. Gunn, Safran and Warner Bros. have to hope that online interest translates to real-world dollars at the box office. If so, that ambitious slate may not get very far. Next up is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is gearing up to shoot early next year. As for the many other projects in development? We’ll have to see what happens.
“Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them,” added Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO & Max Comedy Programming. “We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”
“Thanks to the brilliant imagination of James and the talent of our amazing artists, DC fans fell in love with this new family of heroes,” said Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation. “We are excited to continue this wild ride with our partners at Max. You want more monsters, you’re getting more monsters!”
The cast for the show includes Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot/Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
Creature Commandos season 2 does not currently have a release date.
